Formula E reveal radical new car for season 5

News Articles, Previously Published Work

The cars taking to the track for the fifth season of Formula E will have an entirely new aesthetic, as ABB Formula E unveiled their Gen2 car.

After January’s announcement of a new title sponsor, the all-electric racing championship today made another huge step forward with the unveiling of a radically new designed car.

The first images of the Gen2 car were released today, boasting a controversial halo design around the cockpit, coverage to the front wheels and a larger rear diffuser.

Overall, the bodywork design appears more angular, giving the car a more dramatic and futuristic appearance.

This new design, which will be used for at least the next three seasons, is the first car to be designed by the FIA. The racing governing body assembled a team of leading engineers and designers to create the new car.

But what are the benefits of racing this radically new design?

Firstly, double the new McLaren Applied Technologies battery can store double the energy than the previous Williams Advanced Engineering battery.

This means a mid-race car swap will become a thing of the past. This extra power storage will, not only last for an entire race, but will also let the cars reach higher speeds.

CEO of Formula E, Alejandro Agag displayed his pride at this new venture, stating that “This car represents the future of racing.”

He commented that “When we started Formula E, our goal was to break the mould and challenge the status quo – bringing a revolution to motorsport. This next generation car represents that revolution.”

Jean Todt, the president of the FIA was equally as thrilled by the new venture. “These are very exciting times for Formula E. I’m very proud that the FIA has been at the forefront of this car’s development, it’s something new for the Federation, and the project has been a huge success.”

The physical car will be revealed for the first time at the Geneva International Motor Show on the 6th of March and Overtake Motorsport will have all the latest news, as it happens.
