On the 14th of January, two new faces will take to the wheel of a Formula E card in Marrakesh. Audi’s DTM driver, Nico Muller, and Formula 2’s Prema driver, Nyck De Vries, will get their first taste of all-electric racing.
This mid-season, rookie test will be overseen by current Formula E champion, Lucas di Grassi.
25-year- old Muller has raced in DTM with the Audi Sport Team since 2014. During this time, he has secured four podiums, including one race win. Before then, he was a Swiss Formula 2 champion in 2009 before snatching the GP3 title the following year.
His new team mate for this testing day, de Vries is currently part of the McLaren Young Driver programme. He has been linked to the Audi team after a DTM test with them last year.
Previous to this, the 22-year- old de Vries was crowned Eurocup Formula Renault champion in 2014. More recently he has been winning races with Rapax in Formula 2 before signing to the Prema team for next season.
Team principle, Allan McNish, stated that “This mid-season test is a unique opportunity. Nico and Nyck are going to drive our e-tron FE04 for a number of test kilometres which will give them a good initial impression of the car and the things that are special in Formula E.”
He continued to tell us that “Nico already belongs to the Audi family and we’ve been closely watching Nyck’s career in recent years. Both have their roots in single-seater racing and will no doubt manage well”
Swiss driver, Muller, was clearly excited about the opportunity ahead. “I’ve been watching Formula E as a fan for quite some time but, unfortunately, only on television,” he stated. “When I visit ABT Sportsline the Formula E race car is often parked alongside my DTM car – that’s when I fancy driving it, so I’m all the more excited about this opportunity.”
